Program of Experimental Medicine
POEM

There are many opportunities for POEM members to get involved in support of research in the Department of Medicine. Here are a few we encourage you to consider:

Annual POEM Peer-Review
Every November POEM conducts a formal review of research productivity in the department. All members are formally reviewed every two years and we have developed a comprehensive online peer-review process for this. Potential reviewers are contacted in the fall with an expectation of helping out.

Resident Research Day
The Department of Medicine Resident Research Day is an annual event held in May. We have several opportunities for you to help out: 1. Judging abstracts, 2. Judging posters and oral presentations, 3. Be a presenter, 4. Come out and show faculty support for our trainees.

POEM Research and Update Networking Evening
Biannually, in the spring and fall, POEM hosts the POEM Research and Update Networking Evening event (formally the POEM Faculty Feed and Update Event). This is an informal evening event (over dinner) to bring together researchers in the department to discuss new research ideas and meet our newest research faculty. The goal of these events is to foster greater interaction and research collaboration. All DOM faculty with an interest in research are encourage to attend.

POEM Advisory Committee
The goal of the POEM Advisory Committee is to provide input into the development of POEM's research support programs and policies. Committee membership is by invitation from the POEM Director and is for a three year term with the option to renew.

Mentoring
We highly encourage senior research leaders to support our next generation or research faculty by participating on their mentorship committees. Committee members provide invaluable advice about setting professional goals, defining career trajectory, what grants to apply to and strategies for success as a researcher in a competitive environment.

DOM Internal Reviewer
The Department of Medicine holds an annual DOM Research Competition with a fall deadline. The competition is open to all DOM Practice Plan members with a priority given to Assistant Professor Practice Plan members in their first to seventh year of appointment. The main goal of this research funding competition is to further enable our junior faculty members for sustained research success with external funding agencies.

As a reviewer you will provide a one page written review for the applications assigned to you and participate in a face-to-face meeting with the review committee. If you do participate as a peer reviewer for this research competition, to ensure your contribution effort is noted, our POEM office will notify your Division Chair of your participation as a peer reviewer for inclusion as a part of your annual CDP discussion with your Division Chair.

External Peer-Review
There are many advantages to providing peer-review for your colleague's grant applications that go beyond helping them improve their submission and, hopefully, increasing their chance for success. Some reasons include: the ability to see what other exciting research is going on in the department, finding an opportunity to collaborate, and improving your own grant writing. It is the expectation of POEM membership to participate as a peer-reviewer if invited.
