CORY YAMASHITA, MD, FRCPC, Associate Professor Cory Yamashita, MD, FRCPC, is a clinician-scientist in the Division of Respirology. Dr. Yamashita completed his BSc and MD at the University of Manitoba (’01) and subsequently completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Adult Respirology at the University of Western Ontario (’01-’05). Subsequent to his clinical training, Dr. Yamashita completed a research fellowship under the mentorship of Drs. Jim Lewis and Ruud Veldhuizen (Lawson Health Research Institute, ’05-’07), and pursued a further basic science fellowship under the direction of Dr. Greg Downey (National Jewish Health, Denver, CO, ’07-’09) focusing on molecular mechanisms of acute lung injury and repair. Currently, his research interests include i) mechanisms of acute lung injury and ii) the use of antimicrobial peptide fortified surfactant preparation in bacterial lung infections. Current projects in these areas are focused on the role of matrix metalloproteinase-3 and alveolar macrophages in ARDS/ ventilation induced lung injury and the use of novel antimicrobial surfactant preparation in patients with cystic fibrosis. Dr. Yamashita currently supervises undergraduate and graduate level trainees through a cross-appointment in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology. LUIZ YBARRA, MD, PhD, MBA, DRCPSC, Associate ProfessorDr. Luiz Fernando Ybarra, MD, PhD, MBA, DRCPSC, is an interventional cardiologist and Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. He serves as Co-Director of the Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Program at London Health Sciences Centre (University Hospital) in London, Ontario. His clinical and academic work centers on complex coronary interventions, with particular expertise in CTO revascularization strategies. Dr. Ybarra obtained his medical degree in Brazil, where he completed postgraduate training in internal medicine, cardiology, and interventional cardiology. He subsequently pursued a two-year dedicated fellowship in Chronic Total Occlusion and Complex PCI at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He also holds a PhD in Health Sciences and an MBA in Healthcare Management, graduating with distinction. An internationally recognized expert in CTO and complex PCI, Dr. Ybarra has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact cardiovascular journals. His research spans procedural techniques, access strategies, outcomes research, and contemporary CTO management, and his work is widely cited within the interventional cardiology community. He is the recipient of multiple competitive research grants, awards, and academic honors, and serves as a peer reviewer and editorial board member for several scientific journals. Dr. Ybarra is frequently invited as faculty and speaker at major international cardiovascular conferences, where he contributes to education and knowledge dissemination in complex coronary interventions. Dr. Ybarra collaborates with leading global CTO experts and participates in multicenter registries and international research networks focused on optimizing procedural techniques, improving patient selection, and enhancing procedural safety and outcomes. He actively contributes to international consensus efforts aimed at advancing best practices in CTO intervention. Deeply committed to medical education, he is actively involved in training cardiology fellows and visiting international interventionalists. He regularly participates in hands-on CTO courses, live case demonstrations, workshops, and academic symposia, fostering the next generation of interventional cardiologists.
